Koh Bon
Koh Bon is an island just a few miles north off the Similans. A round opening on the island's west point allows you to see straight through this bizarre cliff formation.

Under water, the amazing scenery continues and shows an interesting wall that eventually fades into a long reef stretching down to a maximum depth of 42 metres.

Manta rays are often seen here between November and May. It is a cleaning station for them and you can see them glide slowly past you while the cleaners do their work. The visibility can reach 30 metres and more. The sandy spots at the deeper end are home to blue spotted stingrays, reef sharks and leopard sharks.

A pinnacle on the northern side of Koh Bon offers a good chance for reef shark and large pelagic encounters. The shallowest part of the pinnacle is 16 metres and often this dive can be combined with a 'big blue' swim across to the island for a second chance to see the mantas.

Koh Tachai
Koh Tachai is the second island to be found on the way from the Similans to Richelieu Rock. Apart from the pristine white sandy beach, the island offers the best diving in this area.

The main reef plateau, 'The Dome' is located approximately 700 metres south off the island and is completely submerged.

The reef offers a plethora of colorful soft, hard and fan corals in combination with rock and boulder formations.

Big schools of barracuda and batfish are regular sightings here and from time to time even the gigantic whale shark finds its way to Koh Tachai.

On the top of the dome look for camoflague experts like the stonefish, find the rare oceanic triggerfish or watch the batfish being cleaned.

Surin Islands

Koh Surin is more famed for its pristine beaches and tranquil waters ideal for yachting. Diving is possible here but visibility and marine life are not up to the standard of other sites in the area. The islands have been designated a national park and is popular with campers. Divers should head over to the world class dive site of Richelieu Rock.

The Boonsung Wreck

The Boonsung Wreck started her days with her sinking in 1984. The wreck is an old tin ore processor that is 60m long, 12m wide and 6m high, and lies positioned in a north to south direction in open sea, but quite close to shore.Descending from the surface, you'll soon be surrounded by clouds of juvenile yellowtail barracuda and bluefin trevally, and schools of Ehrenberg's snapper and blue-striped snapper, that all use Boonsung as a congregation point. There are dozens of masked porcupinefish and common porcupinefish, parading up and down on top of the wreck. They seem to be waiting in line for a clean from the remora's in attendance. There's are also some loose groups of longfin batfish.Diving along the sides of the wreck, look closely and you'll see many types of moray eel, such as zebra morays, white-eyed morays, spotted morays, and leopard morays. Spotfin lionfish and bearded scorpionfish lie in wait too. This wreck is probably the best local site for scuba diving in Khao Lak.

Depth: 12 - 20m

Richelieu Rock

This world class dive site is probably the best place in Thailand to spot whale sharks however since the last El Nino their numbers have diminished. Sightings are a lot more common during the March to May season. The splintered rock can just be seen above the surface at low tide around 18km east of Koh Surin and huge schools of pelagics can be seen on any given day.

All manner of marine life is in abundance here, octopus and cuttlefish can be spotted along side yellow boxfish, morays and cleaner and mantis shrimps. There are many rock crevaces and cracks for marine life to hide in so take it slow and keep a look out. Also look out into the blue where large schools of snappers, jacks and trevally can be seen circling the rock above the thermoclines. Boat traffic and numbers of divers on the site can be heavy during peak season.

Depth: 10 - 40m
